Summary

The Copperbelt College of Education (CBCE) has been training teachers for the junior and secondary school sector since the early 1970s. The IICD-supported project focuses on the integration of ICTs in the curriculum, content development and equipping the lecturers with the necessary teaching skills and knowledge. This fits into the policy of the Ministry of Education, which strongly promotes the use of ICTs in the educational system. The purpose of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of teaching by using ICT to facilitate a learner-centred approach. The medium-term perspective is to fully mainstream the project activities within the college. This entails having all departments involved and the content of all subjects offered by the college adapted.

Update

Updated: 2008-02-25

The project started in August 2007. A needs assessment has been conducted with the lecturers to define the capacity building needs and to establish the level of their equipment needs.

Introduction

CBCE - computerlabIn the strategy paper ‘Educating Our Future’ and the strategic plan 2003 – 2007, the Ministry of Education has recognized the need to make clear that teaching should be more than a ‘transmission of knowledge’ and that more emphasis should be put on the development of desirable skills and attitudes. A learner-centred approach focuses on learner experiences and allows learners to participate in the process of knowledge construction. This approach is appearing in more and more schools across Zambia. The Ministry of Education (MOE) strongly promotes the use of ICTs in the educational system. This project falls completely within the policy of the Ministry of Education.

Objectives

  • All lecturers know and understand where, why and how ICT can be used to enhance teaching and learning
  • All teaching departments (4) integrate ICT in their teaching and learning activities
  • All teaching departments (4) incorporate ICT into the improved teacher training curriculum
  • CBCE develops and institutionalizes ICT usage policy and strategies

Development Impacts

The project will have impact on newly trained secondary school teachers, who will in turn, pass on their new knowledge and skills at the high schools at which they teach.
