Summary

The association of Pharmacists in Mali, Conseil de l’Ordre des Pharmaciens du Mali (COPM), aims to rationalize the communication and information flows with its constituency. It made the first steps by developing a dynamic website (http://www.copm-mali.org) which will allow pharmacists to be informed on the latest developments in their field, and which will give them the opportunity to update their own information through the provision of personal pages.

Unfortunately, the project never took off the way it should have. Some equipment was purchased and the web site was developed, but ownership at the level of COPM was not well established enough to give the project a clear direction.

Objectives

• Facilitate information flow between COPM members
• Make an inventory of all pharmacists of Mali in order to coordinate their activities
• Uncover fake pharmacists
• Facilitate the COPM management and make it transparent
• Put all pharmacists of Mali in a virtual community so they can exchange their experiences
• Promote the professional activities of each pharmacist on  the web
• Sensitise the general public on the negative effect of street medication and auto-medication
• Sensitise the general public on the prevention of certain epidemics and endemic illnesses
• Advise the general public on how to take medicine
• Avail the list of night pharmacies
• Avail the calendar of the different vaccinations of the vaccination programme (PEV)
• Update knowledge on the prescription of medication (medication from the market, alerts of certain medication)
• Provide a list of new medicine authorised in Mali
• Provide the organisation model of this profession in Mali
• Show the different collaboration models applied in Mali

Lessons learned

The project had been formulated under the former president of COPM, but started implementation under a newly elected president who had other priorities. Be careful when ownership is challenged.
