Mali

IICD has been active in Mali since 1999, and focuses mainly on agricultural livelihoods and health.

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a small population spread across a country twice the size of France. One of our flagship programmes in Mali is telemedicine. To bring specialist knowledge to rural areas, IICD helped create a teleradiology system connecting seven regional hospitals via internet to radiologists in the capital. The European Space Agency helped IICD pilot the use of satellites to improve internet connections for the most remote hospitals.

We also work with farmers’ organisations in the Sikasso and Mandé regions. We help these organisations use shortwave radio, internet and multimedia to better communicate with their members and improve their services. IICD also works with shea butter and fruit producers to improve quality and better market their products through the internet and multimedia.

In 2010, IICD had 13 programmes in Mali that reached 644,000 people, including more than 1500 direct users of the technologies and training.

IICD supports Mali-Ntic: the country’s main platform for knowledge sharing on ICT for development. Mali-Ntic hosts information on the main thematic groups G@tic, Tic-Sante and GenRe&Tic.
