A group of primary schools in Kenya’s Pokot and Turkana tribes’ districts is improving its management and education quality by using computers and training teachers and administrators in the use of them. Ultimate goal is to significantly reduce the dropout rate of primary schools students.

News Bolivian Teachers Create Interactive Games for Their Pupils
Teachers from primary schools and secondary schools across Bolivia are creating interactive games to help their pupils learn better. These games and other information are now available online on an educational platform, supported by IICD and its Connect4Change consortium partner Edukans.
News “Vocational Students in Upper West Ghana Learn to Research Better Thanks to Computers”
The use of computers helps students increase their skills in a wide variety of courses, says a group of headmasters and teachers in the Upper Western region of Ghana. Students are already starting to use computers in vocational courses. With the support of IICD and Edukans through the Connect4Change consortium will now also use computers in their other classes.

News Ugandan Organisations Assist Each Other in ICT for Development
Ugandan health and education organisations came together in January to look back on their activities and to give each other practical tips about using ICT for development. This was part of a series of ICT4D learning workshops organised throughout Africa and Latin-America by the IICD-led Connect4Change consortium.
News ‘Learning by Ear’ Programme Provides Audiobooks For Schools Across Africa
Deutsche Welle and IICD have formed a partnership in the ‘Learning by Ear’ programme, where educational programs on an array of subjects are broadcasted in countries throughout Africa. Deutsche Welle is a German producer of television, radio and online content in 30 different languages. It is the organisation responsible for the ‘Learning by Ear’ development programme, which reaches over 30 million people in Africa.
News Kenyan Education Organisation Visit Zambian ICT for Education Projects
Kenyan ICT for Education organisation Nairobits and the Kenyan Ministry of Youth and Sport visited several institutions involved in integrating ICT into vocational training courses in Zambia. Several IICD supported programmes were visited and were used to learn from.
News Schoolchildren in Ghana Go Digital to Increase Employment Chances
Over 10,000 basic school and high school students throughout Ghana are increasing their employment chances by learning how to use computers throughout their courses. In addition they get access to offline digital educational resources that enrich their classes.
Publication Recommendations for Rio+20
IICD's recommendations about using ICT for sustainable development, presented to the national platform Rio+20. This platform is set up as a preparation for the UN conference on sustainable development. This event will be held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012.

In order to successfully use ICT for development, the focus should never be on technology but on people, says Microsoft Research India Co-Founder Kentaro Toyama. He was a keynote speaker at the 'ICT for a greener economy in developing countries' conference organised by IICD.

Ten education organisations in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon regions re-launched a collaboration website, supported by IICD. The website will make internal collaboration easier and will provide more information to an external audience.

Primary schools and some secondary schools in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon regions are going to use computers and multimedia to boost intercultural bilingual education. This programme is supported by international organisations IICD and Edukans.

They both say their research greatly benefited from the use of computers and internet and even helped them to win awards. Students Sante Kayamba and Zoe Chisanga of the IICD-supported Fatima Girls Secondary school in Zambia now recommend ICT for education for all Zambian schools. “E-learning should be a right for students.”

Kenyan IICD-partner SEED and Dutch partner Edukans set up a campaign to supply food to Samburu schools in Kenya. These schools have been severely hit by the drought in the Horn of Africa.

Pastoralist (nomadic) tribes in Kenya, including the Maasai will start working with computers and internet to improve their education. This was the outcome of an event that was co-organised by IICD in Machakos, Kenya in July.
News Bolivian School Computer Labs Advance Towards Economic Sustainability
The dilemma: the school has a computer lab but can’t pay for a computer teacher. Five primary schools in Bolivia’s Santa Cruz region have found a sustainable way. They turn their computer labs into internet cafés at night. The local community can use the computers for a fee. This way, the schools can afford to hire teachers to teach computer basics to their students, maintain the hardware and help with trouble shooting.
