Female Bolivian Indigenous Leaders Receive New Tools for Lobbying
Four regional offices of the IICD-supported organisation for indigenous people in Bolivia (CIDOB) received equipment by Ncomputing last month. This technique makes it possible to use a single computer for several work stations, allowing indigenous women leaders to be more actively involved in discussions about indigenous and women rights.

Crop Price Radio Programme for Farmers goes Nation–Wide in Bolivia
The IICD-supported radio broadcast that provides information on crop prices to Bolivian farmers in Santa Cruz will now be broadcasted nation-wide. The programme makes farmers more aware of how much they can ask for their products when they sell them, thus increasing their profit.
Mobile Devices Help Monitor Access to Healthcare in Ghana
SEND Ghana has launched a project to use mobile devices to collect data to assess if the poor are benefiting from the government’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). IICD will provide technical advisory service and training.
Atos Origin Consultant Demonstrates Free Learning Tools to Zambian Teachers
Atos Origin consultant Berno van Soest introduced teachers in Zambia to digital tools they can use to enrich their curriculum. This was part of his visit to the IICD-supported ENEDCO project in January 2010. Among the tools was a browser to view Wiki content such as Wikipedia offline and software that can be used to easily create quizzes for students.
Burkina Women’s Association Receives Honorary Medal for Community Radio
Pag la Yiri, a women’s association based in eastern Burkina Faso, received an honorary medal for its work in the Zabré region, particularly its community radio station. The medal, Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Burkinabé, is one of the highest honorary medals awarded by the President.

Founder of the world wide web Sir Tim Berners-Lee met with IICD local partner RICNET to discuss using ICT for development in Uganda.
Co-founder Taking It Global Addresses IICD-event on Digital Natives
More than 250 people gathered in Amsterdam on January 15 for the seventh edition of the ICT4D event ‘Fill the Gap’ to discuss digital natives and development. The keynote speaker was co-founder and executive director of Taking IT Global, Jennifer Corriero. The event generated many ideas about how youth in the Global South could use and improve their ICT skills and how youth could be mobilised to use these ICT-skills for development.
IICD Tests Low-cost Interactive Whiteboard by Using a Game Controller
IICD’s technical department is currently testing a digital whiteboard that can be made for under 100 Euros (approximately 150 US Dollars) if a beamer and computer are available. The key component of the system is the controller of the Nintendo Wii, that contains an infrared camera.
Law Students in Bolivia Provide Online Consultation to Victims of Domestic Violence
Law and psychology students in Santa Cruz provide online legal and psychological advice to women victims of domestic violence. This is part of the IICD-supported Casa de la Mujer project. The students are almost finished or recently graduated from the Universidad Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno.
Jozias van Aartsen and Jalbert Kuijper New Members IICD Board of Trustees
IICD is welcoming two new members on its Board of Trustees. As of 1 January 2010 Jozias van Aartsen, mayor of The Hague, will succeed Mrs. Hella Voûte-Droste in the position of chairperson of the Board. At the same time Mr. Jalbert Kuijper, founder and managing director of Xeed and former Lost Boys director will succeed Bernhard van Oranje, founder of Levi9 Global Sourcing, as member of the Board.
Primary Students in Ecuador Make Newspaper on Computer
Students in Ecuador are making a digital newspaper to improve their computer skills and their Spanish. The newspaper medium helps them better both their language and writing skills, as well as use of computer programs.
North Takes Access to ICT for Granted
IICD’s Denise Senmartin has been chosen as one of just 20 foreigner members to take part in the 70-strong Dutch Third Chamber. The Third Chamber is a shadow parliament in the Netherlands that focuses on international development. The chamber’s 2009-2010 theme is New Technologies for Development. Having grown up in Argentina and experienced economic crises, Denise knows how poverty undermines people’s dignity. She strongly believes ICT can make a difference in developing countries.
Global Teenagers Connect Through SMS, Email, Wikis
Students from Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North America are using sms, email and wikis to learn about food production around the world. This is a good example of how IICD’s Global Teenager Project (GTP) connects cultures and helps young people learn from each other. Watch the GTP video to find out more how this works in practice.
Hospitals in Tanzania Test Digital Pen
IT managers of several hospitals in Tanzania will test a digital pen that could potentially benefit hospital doctors. The pen can convert doctor’s handwriting into a digital file which is easier to archive and takes up less space.
IICD and Ugandan Government to Expand Information System for Rural Farmers
IICD and the Ugandan government have signed an agreement to expand a programme that helps rural farmers increase their income through ICT-enabled crop marketing services. The Rural Information System (RIS) programme enables farmers to send and receive production and market information through 26 information centres in isolated areas throughout the country. The information helps farmers sell their produce at better prices. The Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Industry (MTTI) will build ten new centres.
IICD Joins Forces with Five Dutch NGOs to Broaden Reach of ICT in Development
IICD has joined forces with five Dutch development organizations to seek out innovative ways to use mobile phones and the Internet for development. Under the name Connect4Change, the consortium will work with local partners to roll out large-scale programmes that broaden access to and quality of education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
Text Messaging to Help Deliver Health Services in Rural Uganda
A text messaging system will be introduced in the Jinja District of Eastern Uganda to improve rural access to health information and services. Text to Change together with Health Child will launch the system on 3 December. The project is supported by IICD.
Thin Client Workshop Brings Low-cost Green Technology to Uganda
IICD held a workshop in November at Kyambogo University, Uganda to raise awareness of how thin client solutions can cut costs and reduce IT maintenance. Thin client uses software to set up a network of 10 or more users powered by one PC.
Charity Auction Raises over 40,000 Euro for IICD and War Child
A charity auction has raised 43,500 euro for charity organisations IICD and War Child. The auction was organised and visited by IT-directors of major Dutch and International Companies on November 16.
