There are plenty of theories about how ICTs can be used to develop local content for schools in developing countries, but very few actual examples from the field. A group of 22 educational practitioners from IICD-supported projects that use ICT to develop local content were therefore invited to share their experiences in a 4-day Cross Country Learning Event (CCLE) in Accra, Ghana at the end of May.

ICTs have proven to help to solve development challenges. IICD's focus has not been on introducing technological innovation in development sectors purely because they were ‘innovative’ or new on the market. Instead IICD has rather employed participatory, multi-stakeholder approaches to identify and solve structural problems in key sectors such as education, health and agriculture.

On 27 May, a group of 22 schoolteachers, ministry officials, and ICT4E Network and Project Coordinators from eight countries, braved Accra’s rush-hour traffic for an early morning visit to Morning Star; a private Secondary School in the centre of town. They toured the Computer Labs and learned about the school’s experiences with integrating ICT into the curriculum.

She researched the availability and cost of Internet access in various locations in Jamaica, particularly the rural areas. This benchmark of the connectivity status in Jamaica as of November 2007, and six months hence, lays the foundations for continuing to monitor this status.
