IICD has won a tender from European Space Agency (ESA), together with other consortium members TNO from The Netherlands, the Italian group of NGOs ActNow Alliance and UK’s Avanti Communciations Ltd.

Each one with valuable expertise, the consortium will work on the definition and validation of a reference model for capacity building projects using satellite communication. This type of technology and knowledge can contribute to concrete solutions for achieving improved living conditions for even those in areas where little infrastructure exists.

Even though this is a slightly more abstract project for IICD, our knowledge is nevertheless crucial for a successful application of the model. We bring process and support tools, such as the roundtable methodology, to the project. Our extensive knowledge of on-the-ground issues is a valuable addition to the consortium. IICD brings their partners actively into the development and implementation of the model.

The different stages of the two-year project are as follows:

  • Identification of sectors where capacity building projects through ICT have the most added value.
  • Successful sustainable capacity building projects are brought forward by IICD, ActNow and TNO to extract the lessons learned.
  • First iteration of the reference model, a structured set of guidelines, is made.
  • Model is applied to two capacity building projects for validation purposes, one being the IICD-supported Teleradiology project in Mali.

Implementation of capacity building components and installation of the satellite communication and testing of the reference model at the selected projects. In IICD’s it will be the Teleradiology project.
