The IICD-supported ‘Women and ICT’ group in Mali launched an online social network in April to promote women’s participation in development by using ICT.
On its social network the group shares information on its
activities and videos. Discussions are held on the network about topics
such as women’s rights and technology for development.
ICT and women’s entrepreneurship
The founders of the network are the Malian ‘Women and ICT’ group.
This group was set up with the support of IICD and consists of project
partners and other organisations with a gender and ICT aspect. In the
group, various Malian organisations and project partners come together
to share and discuss their experience and results on gender and ICT in
their projects, including ICT and women’s entrepreneurship.
The social network of the ‘Women and ICT’ group was created using
NING. NING is a platform comparable to MySpace and Facebook, where
people can create their own pages and discuss topics of their
interest.
Web 2.0 training
Members of the ‘Women and ICT’ group were trained in how to use
NING in a greater workshop about using web 2.0 tools. The creation of a
NING platform was one of the topics of this workshop. The “women and
ICT group” created its social network shortly after the training.
In addition to the ‘Women and ICT’ group, members of the
‘Agriculture and ICT’ and ‘Health and ICT’ groups also participated in
the workshop. All of them set up their own blog after the training.
