Access to information about the avian flu via the Internet.

The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) supports the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Ghana by putting up an information campaign regarding the bird flu. IICD has put together an ‘Avian Flu Online Information Package’ with basic information over the symptoms and the risk of infection of this illness and a reference to different sources.

The information campaign is directed on taking the largest misunderstanding regarding the bird flu away. A many heard misconception is for instance, that one thinks that chickens are succumbed by heat and people will therefore still consume them. Clear information over the symptoms and fight of bird flu can prevent this.

The on-line information is spread via the local network of IICD in Ghana. IICD supports a number of local organisations in Ghana with using ICTs for development of education, health care and agriculture. She supports them through among others training, workshops, but also through initiating local networks for the exchange of knowledge and information. These networks are now used for the spreading of information over bird flu.

The Information Support Unit of the Ministry or Food and Agriculture uses the information of IICD for developing a campaign with posters and flyers focussing on a wide audience, but especially on farmers. The material will as well be spread in English as in different local languages. IICD supports the information campaign with a small financial contribution too.  Not only IICD offers support, US AID and FAO are involved in other initiatives too. uses the information of IICD for developing a campaign with posters and flyers focussing on a wide audience, but especially on farmers. SIL International, an organisation that studies, documents, and assists in developing the world’s lesser-known languages, has produced free downloadable Avian Flu educational materials now available in 5 major languages. These materials are being produced and distributed in such diverse areas as Mozambique, Cameroon, Indonesia, etc. They are available at http://www.sil.org/literacy/materials/health/avian_flu/intro.htm.
