KPN to donate used computers to schools in Africa

Sector: education

KPN will donate 10,000 used computers to schools in Africa. KPN is replacing its computer park and the used computers will be handed over to SchoolNet Africa (SNA). SNA is an African not-for-profit organization which promotes ICT in education in Africa. IICD and SNA have been working together for several years on the Global Teenager Project.

KPN wants to invest in the knowledge economy and in ICT education. Last year KPN offered all schools in the Netherlands free internet access for a period of three years. This time the SNA's Global Teenager Project will be supported. The aims of this project are to enable secondary school students from all over the world to exchange knowledge and experiences using the internet, e-mail and by chatting together.

In October 2004 SNA launched the "One Million PCs for African Schools" campaign. KPN is the first company to make a substantial contribution to this project. KPN will hand over clean and empty Pentium 2 and 3 computers: software and data will be deleted according to KPN's security policy and the computers will be cleaned. SCC takes care of this process.

SNA has selected Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria for this project. KPN will pay the cost of transporting the computers to Africa which will be carried out by Siso Computers B.V. The computers will be made ready to use in the schools in local centers established by SNA. The project which KPN is sponsoring also includes training the African teachers so that ICT is integrated in the education. This is also part of the SNA's job creation projects.

About SNA

>

SNA endeavours to improve access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) for millions of African learners, by building computer refurbishment capacity in Africa, by promoting affordable software educational application
content delivery for accelerated integration of ICTs in education, by encouraging appropriate liberalisation to provide affordable and innovative wireless telecommunication access for the "last" mile in disadvantaged rural communities, and by empowering youth and encouraging appropriate gender responsiveness in education through ICTs. In order to achieve this aim SNA has, amongst other things, embarked on a Campaign for One Million PCs for African Schools in order to distribute second hand and refurbished PCs to African schools (the "Campaign"). SNA and the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) support the Global Teenager Project www.globalteenger.org of SchoolNet Africa. In 2004 the management and operational activities of GTP were handed over from IICD to SNA, a long since GTP partner of IICD. IICD is strategically and financially still involved in GTP.
