I-Network and IICD pronounce winners of the Open Knowledge Network - Small Grants Fund in Uganda.

In Uganda the Open Knowledge Network aims to stimulate the appreciation, production, dissemination and use of content. In order to identify promising initiatives in Uganda, I-network with the support of IICD, started a call for proposals. More than 120 proposals were submitted and finally 5 projects were selected to be supported under the OKN-SGF.

The nine proposals listed below will be celebrated during the awards ceremony on Monday November 8th:

AWARD WINNERS

Local Community Content Initiatives (LCCI), COFEY-Uganda, Contact: Daniel Semakula COFEY-Uganda proposes to implement community based ICT initiatives in three parishes in Bamunanika County, Luwero District whereby they will identify local people with local knowledge in five study areas (health, agriculture, work & business opportunities, social behaviours and good morals, and education) to generate, package and disseminate local knowledge for young people and make it available to them in electronic formats using ICTs.

Thinkquest Uganda Contest, Think Quest Uganda, Contact: Robert Ssibuulirwa Thinkquest Uganda seeks to pioneer the launch of a national project "ThinkQuest Uganda Contest (TQUG)", a website contest that will develop and promote the participation of Ugandan learners in developing rich Africa related educational material through the use of ICTs. The main purpose of the national program is not only to encourage the participation of Ugandan learners but to open up greater opportunity for parents, teachers, NGOs, ICT support bodies, business institutions, and schools to undertake a collaborative effort in assisting learners to develop material that addresses the community directly.

Uganda Digital Education Resource Bank, SchoolNet Uganda, Contact: Daniel Kakinda The Uganda Digital Education Resource Bank shall train teachers within SchoolNet Uganda schools to develop and effectively identify digital content relevant to Uganda's education system, upload it into a Digital Educational Resource Bank and share it with educators in and out of the country via the Internet. The project shall be implemented at 2 SchoolNet Uganda centers in East and Central Uganda.

Using ICT to champion sustainable livelihoods and good governance in Mafubira Sub County, Jinja District, CEDA-Jinja, Contact: John Kakaire-Menya The Centre for Development Alternatives (CEDA) believes in contributing to the neighbourhood through provision and sharing of information, skills and knowledge. Poverty is considered as the lack of alternatives, which alternatives are information, skills and good practices that can be replicated. Working with the local communication, CEDA proposes to train and build community skills in information gathering, processing and sharing using ICTs and forum theatre as participatory methods for discussion and documentation.

Women's Voices Project, Radio Apac Women's Forum, Contact: Lydia Hope Ogwal The Women's Voices Project proposes to use ICT media, including audio and video productions, to enhance Apac rural women's information creation and sharing among women's groups in Apac District. It is expected that grassroot women will be able to raise their voices to sensitive gender issues and experiences in their communities as well as build their capacities through the teaching and exchange of skills and expertise in various sectors of the economy such as agriculture, business and small enterprise, health and good governance.
