IICD Tests Low-cost Interactive Whiteboard by Using a Game Controller
Jan 14 2010, Netherlands [NL]
IICD’s technical department is currently testing a digital whiteboard that can be made for under 100 Euros (approximately 150 US Dollars) if a beamer and computer are available. The key component of the system is the controller of the Nintendo Wii, that contains an infrared camera.
This technique was created by the US researcher Johnny Lee by using the controller of the Nintendo Wii and a cheap infrared pen. When a computer is then hooked up to a beamer and a controller of the Wii is aimed at the screen, you can write on, click on and move the projected area. This makes presentations more interactive and because of the low costs it is also an interesting way for IICD’s country partners to enhance their presentations.
IICD’s capacity development officer Alfonso Acuna conducted a series of tests and wrote a blog about his experiences and findings. There are also two small video impressions available of his test in English and in Spanish.
