Apr 08 2010, Bolivia [BO], Livelihood opportunities
The IICD supported programme that provides small-scale farmers in Bolivia with crop price information has been featured on Bolivia’s national television network UNITEL. In the popular morning show ‘La Revista’ two of the project’s managers were guests and a live connection was made with a farmers' market.
A reporter from UNITEL's La Revista visited a farmer’s market in Santa Cruz. She asked several market vendors about the price of their products and then spoke to someone who collects prices.
Knowing where to buy the cheapest food
Every day starting at five ‘o clock in the morning, the price collector goes to different markets in Santa Cruz to write down the prices of products. She not only inquires about bulk prices but also asks the market vendors how much they charge per piece. This information is then placed on a website and also transmitted in daily radio broadcasts. This IICD-supported programme reaches two target groups. In the first place farmers are reached. They are interested how much they can charge for their crops if they sell it in bulk. Another target group that is reached are the consumers who want to know on what market they can buy the cheapest food.
Trainings in 16 provinces
After the report on location, in the studio of La Revista, project managers Julio Cesar and Lorgio Serrate told more about the project. In addition to putting the prices on the website extension officers and farmer associations in all 16 provinces are trained to use the information to plan their production and sales in a more profitable way.
Daily morning show
La Revista is a morning show that airs on weekdays between 6 and 9 am. Topics talked about in the studio and on location vary from national and international current affairs, sports, human interest and much more.
