Dec 17 2010, Bolivia [BO], Education
The Confederation of Indigenous People in Bolivia (CIDOB ) awarded IICD the Golden Spear award in recognition of its dedicated support to their organisation over the last ten years.
During CIDOB’s annual meeting with representatives from 43 different indigenous groups from Bolivian’s tropical region, IICD’s Director of Country Programmes Stijn van de Krogt was presented with the ‘Golden Spear.
It was the first time that it has been awarded. Other award were given to an elderly lady and gentleman who contributed remarkably towards indigenous rights at the beginning of the 1990’s.
‘One of the characteristics of a strong indigenous leader is that he or she can use ICTs,’ remarked CIDOB’s President, Adolfo Chávez. IICD has contributed significantly towards their leadership and lobby programme. Potential leaders have a high level of computer skills to be able to stay in touch with each other crossing large geographical distances, debate on indigenous and political rights issues and lobby for their proposals.
Thanks to the integration of ICT as part of their activities, CIDOB
is now recognised as the indigenous organisation with the most
experience in the effective use of ICT in Latin America.
