IICD Contributes to ‘ICT And Climate Change’ Report
Mar 03 2010, Environment
IICD has contributed to a report that shows how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be used by people in the Global South to reduce the risks they face from climate change. The document was released at the end of 2009 and was co-written by organisations that are active in the field of ICT for development.
In the report called ‘Planting the knowledge seed: Adapting to climate change using ICTs’ the role of ICT in meeting the climate change challenge is discussed.
The text includes examples of projects that successfully implemented ICT tools to reduce some climate change risks. These examples range from a community radio station in Burkina Faso that deals with the issue of desertification to a knowledge platform that provides access to information on climate adaptation from a community perspective.
Denise Senmartin, IICD’s knowledge sharing officer focusing on the environment, is one of the contributors to the report. She is thrilled about the outcome. “This is a step towards increasing the sharing, analysis and systematisation of projects amongst organisations.”
The document emerged from a learning event on information and communication technologies and climate change that was held in Johannesburg on 22 December 2008. It was created by members of the BCO Alliance. This alliance brings together international development organisations working on ICT.
