Dutch Festival Visitors Donate to IICD Projects by Going to the Toilet

Two projects supported by IICD are receiving donations in an unconventional way. Visitors of the Dutch traveling theatre festival “ de Parade”, who visit the toilet, have the chance to voluntarily contribute in raising funds for these projects.

Visitors will have the opportunity to get informed on the projects, through posters and small summaries.  On their way out, they will be able cast their donations in cash but also see the amount of funds already raised. So far, the donations are really encouraging since a lot of people have chosen to help.

This innovative idea is launched for the fifth year in a row. Last year, the campaign managed to successfully raise funds for two project that IICD supports, including a project which supported beekeepers in Zambia. As a result, the Organic Producers and Processors Association of Zambia (OPPAZ) that had been working with small scale beekeeping groups, could afford to hire a full-time staff member to assist with the work that is being done to strengthen the production and marketing practices of about 55000 small-scale beekeepers in Zambia. In addition to this, the campaign draw the attention of international honey traders that were willing to import honey produced by the beekeepers of OPPAZ, thus improving their livelihoods.

This year, the toilet campaign, will (amongst other projects) help to raise funds for enhancing the quality of education through smartboards and tablets for students with special needs in Rokana Basic School in Kitwe, Zambia.

Visitors of “De Parade” can also contribute to another IICD-supported project that aims to provide vocational training students of the Chawama Youth Project in Zambia with ICT tools such as video camera, LCD projector, and DVD printer to record and document lessons. This project is part of the Connect4Change Consortium and is supported by IICD and Edukans.

The campaign is an initiative from Dutch NGOs Get it done and Akvo. Akvo is also a partner in the IICD-led Connect4Change consortium.

De Parade” is very popular theatre festival traveling through the biggest cities in the Netherlands, hosting theatre performances and other events. It will be in the Hague from the 6th July until the 15th and will then continue its journey to Utrecht (20 July- 5 August) and Amsterdam (10-26 August).
