Computers for Development

On 6th July, IICD officially joined forces with Computers for Development in order to send 600 computers to developing countries in Africa. This large shipment will greatly benefit rural communities; where lack of access to information often hinders sustainable development.
The 600 computers were donated by Capgemini (a Dutch company that assists IICD with capacity building programmes) and will be sent to IICD’s partners in Uganda, Burkina Faso and Zambia for local distribution. Once installed, the computers will be used in education and health projects: two areas which sadly lack vital modern information.
The computers will play an important role in the effort to promote the widespread use of ICT in the education and health sector. Not only will schools and hospitals benefit, community centres and training institutes are also involved so as to spread the benefit of this project to all those in need. IICD seeks to address local demand for computers to improve education, business development and the strengthening of knowledge networks.
The computers will be delivered hand-in-hand with a capacity development programme in order to gain the most out of this modern medium. Over the past 10 years IICD has developed a strong capacity building programme, which will ensure that the users have the skills to use computer programmes so that this tool can positively support personal or business activities.
