| Country: | Burkina Faso [BF] |
From 15 to 17 April 2007, Burkina-NTIC participated in the first international scientific conference on women and law, held in Tripoli, Libya. The conference, organised by the International Arab-African Women’s Rights Organisation, was attended by more than 400 participants, including prominent members of NGOs, women’s groups and authorities from all over the world.
Karidja Guigma, representing Burkina-NTIC, gave a presentation on the gender digital divide in French-speaking Africa, with the aim of describing the current situation with regard to women’s use of ICT and making women aware of their right of access to ICT. She distributed copies of a book on the subject produced by Yam Pukri and the organisation Gender and ICT (ENDA: www.famafrique.org). The ministers for the promotion of women of Mali and Chad both applauded the book and plan to use it in their own countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to study the concepts and principles of women’s rights. Through sharing of experiences, it sought to build on existing instruments to promote and secure women’s rights through cooperation within and between organisations. The talks given at the meeting covered topics such as laws that protect women, women and social security law, women’s participation in political and economic affairs and the Qaddafi project for women and children.
