The Zambia association for Research & Development (ZARD) is pleased to announce the launch of a new website, www.widnet.org.zm under its WIDNet Programme. The Women's Information for Development Network (WIDNet) is the place for information on the status of women and girls in Zambia. WIDNet was initiated and is spearheaded by the Zambia Association for Research & Development (ZARD) and funded by the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD). A network of ten partner organizations, we contribute to the socio-economic development and improved livelihoods of women and girls by sharing our information and resources. The website will also highlight successes and failures in the struggle for equality.

The website was officially launched by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Vocational Training, Dr. Paul Zambezi, who praised ZARD for spearheading the WIDNet programme and urged women to rise to the challenge and participate in developmental issues. He said the Ministry is mindful of gender equality and it is for this reason that they launched the Gender and Disability Policy last month. One of the issues articulated in the policy is women participation in science and technology.

The ZARD chairperson, Mr. Kasote Singogo, in his speech lamented the importance that ZARD and its partners attaches to evidence based information and knowledge sharing. This is important because it reduces duplication, we are able to learn from each others best practices and the impact of the work of the women’s movement is documented. ZARD will strive to continue being a hub of information for the women’s movement in Zambia and the website will ensure that it reaches the whole world.

The ZARD Executive Director Mrs. Priscilla Mpundu, urged the guests to visit the WIDNet website to get informed on the situation of women in Zambia and women in particular for socio-economic empowerment. The launch was held at the Protea Hotel, in Lusaka on the 23rd of February,2006.
