In October, over 200 secondary school classes from 26 countries worldwide will start communicating via e-mail and Internet in English and French Learning Circles.

With this take off, the English Learning Circles of IICD’s Global Teenager project are held for the tenth time in the history. The Global Teenagers will discuss different Basic and Advanced themes such as Music, Technology, Human Rights and World Peace. The Learning circles will end just before the Christmas holidays.

The overall vision of the Global Teenager project is to use new teaching methods facilitated by ICTs to promote intercultural exchange. This will lead to a better understanding and respect of differences in cultures and societies. With several years of experience, the Learning Circles have already proven to be a very powerful tool. In the ten-week structured exchange of information, students and teachers go through the process of introduction, asking information about other people and cultures, receiving information on this theme and interpreting the information from their own perspective.

The Learning Circles can be followed through the Virtual Campus website under the Classroom section. The Learning Circles make use of the Dgroups technology, which is a simple-to-use, open knowledge platform where the Learning Circle students can get in touch with each other. Although guest visitors are not allowed to enter comments, they are able to view all the exchanged emails by clicking on a certain theme.

The English Learning Circle has been around for 5 years, while only last year, the French Learning Circles were introduced. This time, the facilitation of the Circles is transferred from the Netherlands to Burkina Faso, which allows the French circles to mature as a counterpart of the English Learning Circles.
