Country: Jamaica [JM]
Sector:

In a rapid paced environment, the need for research in developing countries is becoming critical to leap frog into the 21st Century with technology and innovation for the greater benefit of the civil society. Research is becoming increasingly necessary for the purpose of allocating scarce resources and to assist in correcting their misallocation.

The report on ICT-usage in the Entertainment/Music survey is the first in a series of three that will add to existing wealth of research studies that have been conducted on the sector over the past decade. The entire report can be summarized by the following points:
  • Most respondents are small production companies that also have non-entertainment business plans to expand.
  • Most firms are using ICT at a basic level but between one third to 40% and see a need for Networking and MIS.
  • Most respondents have invested in ICT in the past year and most intend to maintain or increase the level of investment.
  • Over half the respondents use the Internet for promotion and about half claim that ICTs have helped their business performance in general.
  • Respondents see benefits for increased capacity, improved administration and improved customer satisfaction but want more affordable technology.
  • Most respondents have no ICT plan and have not performed a formal training needs assessment survey.

In this paper, we take a closer look at a small sample of the Entertainment and Music sector, and state the findings of the present level of ICT usage. Several recommendations will be submitted for the sector's development including the use of technology that already exist within these small and medium enterprises (SMEs) or mechanisms for innovation and technology transfer that can be used to enable development for the present and future. Especially in the Jamaican music arena, there is increasing acclaim and achievements of Jamaican music internationally, which provides clear opportunities for economic growth and development.
