‘Learning by Ear’ Programme Provides Audiobooks For Schools Across Africa
Nov 25 2011, Education
Deutsche Welle and IICD have formed a partnership in the ‘Learning by Ear’ programme, where educational programs on an array of subjects are broadcasted in countries throughout Africa. Deutsche Welle is a German producer of television, radio and online content in 30 different languages. It is the organisation responsible for the ‘Learning by Ear’ development programme, which reaches over 30 million people in Africa.
The programs are made available through Deutsche Welle’s and its partner’s radio stations as well as on the Internet and CD. They touch subjects such as politics and society, economy and environment, health and social issues, general knowledge and are provided in 6 different languages.
IICD has recently received audiobooks, which are now being distributed to centres by our country managers and through our national ICT4D networks in Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda. These audiobooks will be used as a tool in education, health and economic development programmes, classrooms and vocational training programmes. IICD is further providing support by using its Monitoring and Evaluation tool to evaluate how the materials address the educational needs of the target groups and provide quantitative feedback, which can be useful in further development and expansions of the programme.
Our partners in Kenya are already delighted with the offer from Deutsche Welle. One of our country managers reports: "They are ordering in bulk!"
Both Deutsche Welle and IICD work in the field of education and capacity building with young people in Africa. However it is their differences in approach of project support and involvement that add value to this partnership. Together they are working towards the same objective.
