A network which will focus on ICT for Health - known as Afya Mtandao (Swahili for Health Network) - was officially launched on January 31st 2008 in Mwanza, Tanzania. The network unites Tanzanian health workers and promotes the use of ICT in the health sector by providing a knowledge-sharing platform for health workers, raising awareness if ICT in the health sector and providing ICT support services for health institutions.

For 5 days in February, a few members of the IICD Board of Trustees travelled to Zambia to visit some of the projects supported by the IICD country programme. Starting in the Copperbelt Province and finishing up in the capital, Lusaka, the board was able to meet and interact with IICD-supported programme partners, Ministers, end-users and other stakeholders, allowing them to get an insight into the on-the-ground developments and future challenges facing the country.

A prestigious award in the Netherlands – Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau – was bestowed upon Jac Stienen, former Managing Director of the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD), on 11 March 2008 in The Hague during a symposium held to mark his retirement. The symposium was attended by representatives of several prominent development organisations, parliamentarians, members of IICD’s Board of Trustees, and present and former employees of IICD.

IT company Altran, part of the French Altran Group, recently signed an agreement for three years with IICD. The company will send her employees to development projects in Africa. The collaboration is mainly focusing on sharing knowledge and expertise in the field of e-governance with both IICD and its local partners in Africa who want to apply ICT to alleviate poverty and to improve basic facilities like good governance.

On Friday Feb 1, 2008, the Fresh Food Trace web platform of the mango-exporting company FRUILEMA GIE in Mali was proudly presented before a large audience in Mali's capital Bamako. The platform, born from a fruitful tripartite partnership between Fruilema, IICD and Manobi, will help the mango exporters in Mali to further enhance the traceability of their products and to maintain GlobalGap certification standards.

IICD supports some 12 ICT-initiatives in Mali. As board member of IICD, I – Henny Helmich - had the opportunity to visit six of these projects in the first week of 2008. The visit was organised by Francois Laureys, Country Manager Mali of IICD, in collaboration with Mohamed Sangare, the local counterpart IDC (ICT Development Centre).
