RSS

by admin last modified 2006-07-31 12:17

Using RSS feeds is an easy way to automatically stay informed about your favourite websites. It is no longer necessary to surf to web pages to check if they have been changed. Typical applications include email newsletters, blogs or even websites.

What is RSS

Different icons

New standard icon

RSS can stand for “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary” or “RDF Site Summary. RSS feeds can be used to publish information from another website onto your own. Or you can subscribe to an RSS feed through an RSS newsreader. The most common use for RSS files is for news and other websites like blogs. When you publish a feed, or subscribe to one, the feed will display a list of items which contain a title, summary, and a link. This list will automatically be updated with new content when it is made available. RSS feeds can be recognised by XML, RDF and RSS icons, or the new standard icon as shown on the right.

IICD newsfeed in your website

In order to publish IICDs newsfeed in your website you need to translate the XML based text into a format which displays in a user friendly manner for your visitors.. To do so you can use several tools to translate the feed. One easy way is to use "Maricopa". All you need to do is enter the URL of the feed, and the tool will supply you with a javascript which you only need to copy and paste into your website. We have done this for you, for the IICD news feed.

Copy the entire script below and paste it into your webpage where you want the newsfeed displayed.
(Tip: Place your cursor in the field below and select "ctrl+a", and then "ctrl+c". This will make sure you select all of the script.)

IICD news in your newsreader

To automatically receive news from IICD, you need to subscribe to a newsreader or aggregator as they are also known. This is a programme or website that automatically checks your list of feeds and lets you know what’s new on each site in your list. An online newsreader you may consider is Bloglines, but there are also newsreaders you can download such as Sage.

The URL you need to subscribe to in your newsreader is: http://www.iicd.org/iicd/articles/RSS
